Why empowering your employees to create their own path benefits everyone

At ADCO we’ve discovered that enabling our people to make their own decisions and take their own actions instils trust, fosters employee motivation, and helps us to retain the people with whom we have built our success. This not only pays dividends to us, but to the clients we work with and the projects we deliver for them too.

It’s quickly become one of the biggest cliches in business, but a company’s employees are its most valued asset. However, that’s only true when those employees are engaged and motivated in their careers.

Creating engaged and motivated employees

There are three important building blocks every team member needs to stay engaged and motivated.

  1. The opportunity to use their talents and strengths on the job
  2. Encouragement about how they are performing and developing
  3. Feedback that gives them the belief the work they are doing is contributing to the company’s success

These behaviours help to empower employees, raising their morale and fostering a more collaborative spirit in your team. It can also create a company culture where people take the initiative and feel more confident to make their own decisions and propose solutions to problems.

Four key steps to enabling employee empowerment

  1. Recognise hard effort

When employees are recognised, they feel more respected, more confident, and more determined to achieve an even stronger job performance. At ADCO, we’ve found that honest feedback encourages our employees to problem-solve and truly learn from their mistakes.

  1. Communicate your company goals

Everyone, at every level, on the team needs to be on the same page when it comes to where the company is heading. We define and communicate our ambitions to our people and discuss their job roles and duties. It’s vital team members don’t step on each other’s toes or veer into areas not within their remit. Because that could mean some other vital duty in their remit is being overlooked.

  1. Promote problem-solving

Where a problem arises, we encourage team members to come up with a solution themselves, rather than wait for one from someone else. That can potentially bring a project to a standstill(!) There’ll always be someone available to support, but micromanaging people when an issue rears its head will demotivate your team.

  1. Provide needed resources

Empowerment won’t happen on its own. Mentorship and ongoing training is like food and water to the process. We have training systems in place at ADCO to make sure all of our people are up to date with their accreditations and certifications, and ensure that our tools and equipment are up to speed. Covering these bases provides our team members with the confidence to succeed independently as part of our team.

ADCO values empowerment

We’re just as committed at ADCO to building high-quality professionals as we are high-quality construction projects. Because our success relies on the people on our team, we have defined six core values that help everyone here to grow and overcome any challenges they face.

Communication: We learn to listen carefully to each other’s needs, as well as those of our clients.

Solutions Focused: We always try to come up with new, innovative, and practical ways to solve problems, whether that’s on a project, professional or personal level.

Take Responsibility: We prove our trust in our people by giving them the opportunity to take on more responsibilities and grow their expertise.

Be Helpful: We support each other with the space to feel safe, both mentally and physically.

Commitment: We’re committed to creating an inclusive and diverse workspace where everyone’s background and ideas count, and where they can be comfortable being themselves.

Be Part of a Team: Because our team is small, everyone knows, trusts, and relies on each other.

Our team members know that they matter

Empowering our people in their roles and providing them with the encouragement and resources to create their own path matters – both in their lives and in their careers. We noticed that the more we allow our people to bring what matters to them to their work, the more they bring to the success of the team at ADCO.
