Why empowering our site teams with a sense of purpose is good for project delivery

The more we allow our people to bring what matters to them to their work, the more they bring to the success of the team at ADCO.

It’s only when something major happens in all of our professional lives, something that impacts the way we work, that we get to take a step back and wonder if what we’re doing is something both personally and professionally rewarding.

That was how ADCO came into being, born in the global financial crisis and founded in the recession of 2009. Given the backdrop to that recession, our mission at ADCO was to deliver construction management services with transparency, consistency, and respect for the professional teams and clients we work with, as well as each other.

We are a business that grows with challenges. So when another major crisis visited itself upon the world at the start of 2020, in the form of the COVID-19 pandemic – and people began to put more priority on their health and wellbeing – it was time to evolve once more.

Building healthy employees with purpose

When the world became a place in which it felt so much safer to stay at home and in bed, we put all of our energy into giving our people reasons to get up and come to work.

Why? Well, according to various studies, people with a sense of purpose in their work are happier, more fulfilled, 17% less hospital stays, 44% less risk of cardiovascular disease, 48% less risk of heart attacks, and have lower levels of inflammation. “They also are more likely to engage in self-care and get their regular screenings and exercise,” says Dr Britt Andreatta, an internationally recognised thought leader in neuroscience and psychology and learning to unlock the best in people and organisations.

Employees who say that they have a sense of purpose at work are:

  • Nearly 7 times more likely to report higher resilience
  • 4 times more likely to report better health
  • 6 times more likely to want to stay at that company
  • 1.5 times more likely to go above and beyond to make their company successful

Becoming a purpose-driven organisation

Today’s workers want employment in companies that have a purpose. This is especially true for millennials and generation Z, who will make up 75% of the workforce by 2025.

The environment is something that matters deeply to our employees, in an industry that accounts for 37% of global carbon emissions. That’s why we implement sustainability at every level in our business. We are continually seeking ways to reduce carbon, pollution and minimise the impacts of our office and site-based activities on the environment. So we have developed an Environmental Policy Document and put in place Environmental Operating Procedures. ADCO encourages the active cooperation of all members of staff to ensure the effective and responsible delivery of services to our clients.

Taking pride in our work is empowering

Quality and safety are pillars of our culture and purpose. All of the people on our team take pride in their work and in delivering a quality product and service. This passion instils responsibility and enhances the overall safety of every project. Indeed, health and safety has become something that unites us all at ADCO. It is one of the reasons we were the winner of the Excellence in Health & Safety award at the 2022 Irish Construction Industry Awards for our “Mind Your Mental Health” safety campaign.

Making a positive impact in the community

As a team and as a family at ADCO, we believe in staying together. That’s why we support the work of Ronald McDonald House Charities Ireland (RMHC) who provide accommodation and a caring, supportive environment to families whose children are undergoing medical treatment at CHI in Crumlin. Our support includes our annual Santa run, delivering toys and presents to the children staying at RMHC. We even took the fundraising to new heights this year

Our team members know that they matter

Purpose is an overarching sense of what matters in a person’s life. It’s driven by their core values and gives not only their life, but their work, a sense of meaning. So giving our people purpose matters, because it harks back to why ADCO was founded and what has made us successful: delivering what we promise and respecting the people we work with every day.
