Working Against the Odds

How ADCO is working against the odds of environmental elements in the construction industry

As a firmly established, build and fit-out contractor in Ireland we have our fair share of experience working against the odds. The truth is that working in the construction industry there is just no escaping the weather, natural elements and the environment. Project planning and design must take into account the landscape, geography and local weather.  Here we discuss some of the typical challenges facing construction projects and how we at ADCO work to mitigate the risk to our people and our projects.

Working against the odds: mitigating the risks to our people

No matter where your project is taking place, in a city or an isolated site, the crew is going to be exposed to the daily weather patterns in that area. For a new build or refurbishment, they may be exposed for their entire working day, but even on a fit-out workers will still be exposed on their daily commute or for shorter periods.

Wind, rain or snow can slow or stop external work due to discomfort as well as safety issues, while at the extreme ends of the temperature ranges there is a serious threat of hypothermia and heat stroke. Rain or snow can increase the risk of slipping and tripping as well as the threat of flooding while intensive dry periods can increase dust and reduce visibility. Working against the odds is also about the threat of strong winds which can worsen dust or in extreme cases throw debris or improperly stored materials from heights and you have a recipe for a highly hazardous workplace. This is before we even mention the dangers of sudden and severe storms including lightning and hurricanes.

At ADCO our award-winning dedication to health and safety means we are all committed to continuously improving our safety culture and sending each and every employee home safe every day. We make sure that we have carefully considered the hazards and potential risks that the weather and location can have on everyone working on our sites.

When working against the odds, one of the first steps is to monitor the weather and environment and schedule tasks as appropriately as possible. In some cases where the schedule is less flexible, we look at alternatives like modular construction to reduce the time our crew spends out in the elements. We make sure that whatever the task and whenever it is scheduled that everyone has appropriate PPE and on-site facilities to ensure maximisation of safety and comfort in all weather conditions.

Another tool in our arsenal is our “clean as you go” policy which is communicated to everyone sitewide in induction and reinforced in toolbox talks. Good housekeeping sets the tone for a successful project, and it means that we are prepared as much as possible. For example, by always storing harmful substances correctly and by ensuring that all loose tools and materials are securely stored or fastened down when not in use, we get ready by staying ready.

Lastly in our arsenal of working against the odds is our mantra that “communication is key”. In the event of dangerous or extreme weather conditions we follow stringently detailed communication protocols ensuring everyone knows our company policy and where to turn if they have any questions. We monitor any changes in the weather and environment and make swift and decisive decisions in the event of unexpected weather conditions by placing safety at the forefront of our choices and disseminating this information through pre-defined communication channels.

Working against the odds: mitigating the risks to the project

Wind, rain and snow can also directly impact the project. In addition to the direct time delays caused by severe weather there can be serious damage to structures and materials. Excessive rainfall can flood work areas and open buildings can become bogged down in silt and debris. In extreme cases flooding may even sweep equipment and materials away entirely. Strong winds may mean enforced down time for cranes when lifting becomes too dangerous and severe winds could cause physical damage to the structure or improperly stored materials.

As we mentioned previously, initially we mitigate these risks by looking at our schedule first. We plan activities in advance by understanding the expected weather conditions and scheduling our work as appropriate. We monitor and review our schedule regularly and make adjustments when and where they are needed. For example, rescheduling specific works in anticipation of changes in weather.

Conducting thorough risks assessments and taking a proactive approach to dealing with potential problems before they occur is one of our most important methods of working against the odds. Weather events are notoriously unpredictable by their nature so having suitable measures in place prior to them happening can drastically lessen their impact.

For example, on certain sites we make sure we have adequate water pumps available so that we can clear our work areas as quickly as possible and make them safe again. By having plastic sheeting readily to hand we can cover recently completed work and protect it from the elements. Our “clean as you go” policy also means that materials and tools are correctly stored at all times and saves time when preparing the site for unexpected storms, hurricanes or blizzards. These are simple measures which can add up to huge time and cost savings in the long run.

By implementing sound business continuity and safety policies, in conjunction with an effective communication system we enhance our ability to continue with business as usual, whatever the elements throw at us without putting our crew or our project in danger.
