The Construction Revolution Will be Digital

ADCO shares our views on the lesser discussed benefits of construction digitalisation.

The Digital Landscape

Digital transformation in the construction industry hasn’t been as straightforward as it was for other industries. Projects are complex, contractors and subcontractors are brought in on different programmes, and builds can happen on isolated or problematic construction sites, where it is difficult to utilise technologies. This explains in part why construction has been slower than other industries in adopting new technologies and automated processes despite the known benefits of increased productivity and return on investment.

The CIF’s (Construction Industry Federation) corporate partners, FlowForma, partnered with Construction Dive to survey 100+ construction executives on their thoughts about the digitisation landscape in the construction industry, and report on the findings. The report found that the value of digitisation is clearly understood, with 87% of construction executives and managers accepting that it gives construction firms a competitive advantage. However, despite this, just under half of construction firms say they are still at a beginner or intermediate stage of their digital capabilities.

ADCO’s View

We have always prioritised innovation and have been utilising BIM Technologies and working on automating our processes for many years now.  BIM technology ensures that data is passed quickly and accurately from the design stage, on to engineering and construction. Utilising BIM fast-tracks the construction lifecycle, without compromising the quality of a build. It reduces the project delays seen so frequently in construction and delivers significant cost savings across the lifecycle of a project.

As a Fit Out, New Build and Design and Build contractor, we have completed a number of high-profile projects with our international blue-chip client base. Some of these involved the full lifecycle from build and fit out to project management and waste management. Here we share some of the lesser discussed benefits to construction digitalisation.

Improved Decision Making

Automating construction processes and incorporating BIM throughout the project lifecycle allowed us to gain access to a wealth of data we didn’t have before. This improved decision-making and ensured that challenges could be quickly identified and overcome. Increased visibility over project data also meant that logistical problems were flagged earlier in the project life cycle and on-site decision-making could happen in advance of the construction process even starting.

Enhanced Collaboration

Process automation and BIM Technologies in construction helps construction teams to connect and collaborate at a much faster pace. As an industry we rely on a huge variety of processes and people to allow any project to reach full completion. As well as that the agility and ability to adapt to changing circumstances is key.

An integrated connected construction platform (e.g., ProCore) ensures that employees, subcontractors and stakeholders can remain agile as they navigate complex projects. Vitally this agility is not at the expense of accuracy or communication. In fact, it can actively enhance collaboration with features such as process accelerators, external stakeholder engagement and offline capability built into the system.

Reduced Risk

Health and safety has always been a top priority for ADCO and our safety record is one of the reasons over 80% of our work is sourced from repeat business clients. In fact, we have just recently been shortlisted for the Excellence in Health & Safety award by Irish Construction Industry Awards

Although there are no steps we can take which would eliminate risk entirely, our approach is to take preventative measures wherever possible. One of these steps was to reduce our dependence on traditional methods (e.g., Excel spreadsheets) for creating audits and reports. We have found that with process automation, online forms with exact data entry fields can help to mitigate the risk of data not being recorded accurately. Every step towards a safer working environment, be it baby steps or giant leaps is a move in the right direction.

At ADCO we recognise that each project is unique. We tailor our approach to the specific needs of each client and we go to great lengths to make sure that these needs are recognised and achieved. Find out more about the services we provide here.
