Project Background

Also known as Merck in the USA and Canada, MSD is a leading research-driven healthcare company. The organisation has an excellent track record for discovering new medicines that treat the world’s most significant health challenges in order to benefit patients globally.

MSD Ireland is one of the country’s leading healthcare companies, having been first established here over 50 years ago and today employs 1,900 across four sites in Tipperary, Cork, Carlow and Dublin. The Irish sites manufacture approximately half of MSD’s top twenty products, saving and enhancing lives in over sixty countries around the world.

For this particular project, MSD Ireland required a build and fit-out contractor to complete the architectural finishes in this a world-leading biotech facility in Swords Co. Dublin. The facility was designed to make a key cancer treatment therapy, Keytruda, with an aggressive production start deadline to be hit as part of the build process.

Execution

Having worked with MSD on a number of previous occasions, ADCO Contracting had familiarity with MSD and how best to work the project through to completion. We deployed our MSD ‘tried and trusted’ team and supplemented the proven resources with additional personnel required for the project. As with all our complex projects, director-level involvement from ADCO Contracting ensured a high level of project control, quick and correct decision making to move the project along quickly.

ADCO were keenly aware that space on the site was at a premium as several areas were under construction at the same time. ADCO Contracting leveraged our 10,000 sq.ft storage and distribution centre in Dublin to adhere to a Just-in-Time (JIT) delivery ethos to ensure there was no excess materials stored on the site.

ADCO Contracting have an excellent safety record on site, an impressive feat given the  complex nature of the project and intrinsic health and safety risks to be managed. ADCO Contracting also selected and managed a built eco-system of vendors and partners. Through contractor vetting, onsite inductions and strict communication, auditing and reporting, ADCO Contracting ensured our impressive safety record on site stemmed across all vendors and partners.

The project is on track to be the largest and fastest projects of this scale to be delivered in Ireland. This October the project reached over 3 million man hours without a single LTI (Loss Time Incident). This is a very rare achievement for a project of this scale and complexity.
